Install Windows 7 from external USB drive

Prerequisites:

  • USB memory stick or USB harddisk with at least 4 GB disk space
  • Windows 7 installation DVD or ISO image

Insert a USB memory stick or USB harddisk and perform the following steps:

  1. First of all make your external drive bootable with a FAT32 file system.
  2. Change the label of the external drive to „Win7“.
  3. Open the Windows 7 installation DVD or image file (use a tool like WinZip or WinRAR for opening the image file) and copy all its content to the USB drive.
  4. Boot the system to install Windows on from the external drive and follow the installation guide. Maybe you have to change the BIOS settings to enable booting from a USB drive.
